FAQs about dental implants

  • Does getting dental implants hurt?

None of the procedures that you have at Middle Lane Dental should cause you any pain, including dental implants. This is because we use local anaesthetic to numb your mouth so that you can’t feel anything while treatment is performed. Although the idea of getting dental implants can feel a little worrying, the surgery is considered minor and shouldn’t take more than an hour to complete. You may feel some discomfort once the anaesthetic starts to wear off, but this can usually be controlled using over the counter pain relief.

  • How long does it take to get implants?

Getting implants is a process rather than a quick fix. In some cases, it may be possible for badly decayed or damaged teeth to be removed and replaced with temporary generic artificial teeth the same day. However, this is rare and in most instances, you should expect it to take between three and six months for implants to be ready for you to use your mouth and teeth normally again. This is because implants rely on a process called osseointegration to be successful. This where the bone of the jaw fuses around the implanted post, anchoring it permanently in place. Nevertheless, it’s also important to remember that every patient is different and you should ask your Crouch End dentist to provide you with an accurate estimated timeline for your treatment.

  • Will I have to manage without teeth for a while?

This is a common fear among younger patients who are undergoing dental implant treatment. In nearly all cases, the patient will be fitted with a temporary crown or denture to ensure that they can carry on using their teeth while their bespoke implants are being created for them.

  • Will I still need to see the dentist if I have artificial teeth?

You may not experience dental decay in artificial teeth, but you are at risk of developing gum disease. Your Middle Lane Dental dentist will still want you to attend regular appointments so that they can monitor the health and condition of your other teeth and gums, as well as the implants themselves. Gum disease can put implants at risk, so your dentist will want to be particularly sure that your gums are as healthy as possible.

  • How long will implants last?

With the right care and attention, a dental implant could last for several decades or more. Your Crouch End Middle Lane Dental dentist will advise you of the best way to preserve the condition of your implants for as long as possible.

  • Am I a good candidate for dental implants?

While many patients will be able to benefit from the dental implant technique, it’s not necessarily the best solution for everyone. Before you can be approved, you’ll need to have a consultation with your implant dentist at our Crouch End dental practice, who will assess your suitability. Patients must be in good general health, not smoke and not have any chronic conditions such as uncontrolled diabetes, heart disease, autoimmune disease or very high blood pressure. If you have signs of gum disease, this will need to be corrected before you can think about getting dental implants.

  • Is there any age limit for dental implants?

The minimum age for getting dental implants is 18, but there is no upper age limit at all! In fact, lots of our patients have received implants well into their ‘golden’ years.

  • Can I wait to get dental implants?

While you can wait to get dental implants, you might not want to. You also may find that you develop some issues if you do. For example, the roots of natural teeth help stimulate the jaw bone to keep it strong. Without them, and without dental implants to take over, the jaw bone could start to deteriorate, changing the shape of your face and making you look older than you are. Fortunately, implants continue to stimulate the bone so that you can retain your face shape without compromise.

  • Are dental implants expensive?

Dental implants are far more than your average dental procedure and require a knowledgeable team of experienced and skilled professionals to deliver an exceptional level of quality and care. The process involves carefully-taken digital impressions, the creation of the implants themselves, the planning and the execution of the treatment as it has been planned. All of this is taken into account when it comes to creating the cost associated with treatment, with most patients who have had implants agree that it is an exceptional investment in their long-term oral health. This is especially true when you consider that with the right care, implants could last several decades or more.

What are dental implants?

Dental implants are one of the most effective techniques for replacing missing teeth

Dental implants provide patients and dentists with a new way of replacing teeth that have been lost or required extraction. They have two sections - a titanium post or screw that is designed to replicate the natural tooth root, and a crown which forms the visible part of the tooth. The titanium post is surgically inserted into the jawbone which heals around it, anchoring it permanently into your mouth. This gives dental implants the unrivalled strength and stability that they are known for. Meanwhile, the bespoke crown that tops it means that it looks, feels and behaves just like a natural tooth.

Here are just some of the reasons why patients prefer dental implants over bridges and dentures:

  • Implants are independently-supported, meaning that the treatment doesn’t affect neighbouring teeth or compromise their integrity

  • Implants stimulate the jaw bone in the same way that a natural tooth root does, helping to halt the natural bone loss that occurs with missing teeth. This keeps your jaw strong and prevents deterioration of facial features that can cause an aging appearance

  • Implants are permanent and remain securely in your jaw, whatever you do

  • Implants restore the strength of your bite so that you can eat and chew whatever foods you enjoy without worrying about your teeth

  • With no missing teeth, implants can help ensure that you maintain a more youthful appearance

  • With the right care and attention, including regular visits to your dentist and hygienist, dental implants are guaranteed for at least 10 years and could last a lot longer!
