As their name suggests, crowns are worn over the top of existing teeth.
Dental crowns are hollow and the space inside is used to accommodate your affected tooth. They sit over the top of the tooth, covering it completely right down to the gum line. Modern dental crowns can be made from several materials including 100% ceramic, porcelain fused to metal (pfm), metal, stainless steel and even gold. Each has their own benefits and considerations.
At Middle Lane Dental, we use dental crowns to treat a variety of dental problems, including:
Restoring the strength and functionality to a tooth that has been damaged or severely decayed
Restoring a weakened tooth after root canal treatment
Concealing staining and discolouration
Correcting a tooth that is undersized or misshapen
To support a dental bridge
To provide the visible part of a dental implant
In most cases, two appointments will be needed to plan and execute your dental crown treatment
The dental crown procedure usually takes place in two parts. During the first, your tooth will be prepared by removing any decay or damaged tissues so that it is healthy and free from disease. It may also be necessary to remove a little enamel to create enough space for the crown to sit over the top of the tooth. After this, digital impressions will be taken which will be used in the creation of your bespoke crown, and you’ll be fitted with a temporary, generic variety while it is prepared.
During your second appointment, your temporary crown will be removed and replaced with your newly created one. After checking the fit, it will be secured permanently to the tooth, completing your treatment.
As with any dental restoration, your crown needs to be properly taken care of to make sure it lasts
You will want your dental crown to look healthy and natural and remain strong and functional for as long as possible. The best way to do this is to take very good care of your oral hygiene by brushing your teeth twice a day, flossing once a day and visiting our Middle Lane Dental dentists for regular check-ups. Although your crown can’t develop a cavity, this will help ensure that bacteria and decay don’t build up around it or get beneath it and cause you to experience problems. Professional cleans with our hygienist are invaluable too.
Dental bridges are recommended for patients who have several adjacent teeth missing.
A dental bridge is a popular solution that can be used to replace several missing teeth in a row. Each bridge is made from one or more dental crowns, which are fused together to create a single unit. This is then attached to two teeth at either end of the gap using dental crowns, or in some cases, dental implants. The result is a secure, natural-looking restoration that enables you to rediscover your smile.
